The green couch that is centered in the living room of my New York apartment is what started my journey of living independently. It sits in a small space, occupying a whole wall. Its color takes over the rest of the room. It is subtle, but a statement at the same time. The olive color is the first thing you see when you walk through the door. Complemented by light pink curtains and a blue rug, the couch still stands out. It has very square edges that are only slightly rounded on the corners. It is small, almost a loveseat, but somehow sits four people. Small diagonal lines run through the couch, crossing over each other and making diamond shapes. Each intersection has a small tuft that adds dimension to the couch. There are two large cushions that are divided, but can’t be separated from the rest of the couch. This is because the couch doubles as a futon. Perfect for sleeping or spreading watch a movie. The back cushions are split down the middle, which allows for the people occupying it to choose how high or low they want to put their side. If they want to sit up straight, they can put the back cushion at a 90 degree angle, or if they prefer to lean back while they sit, they can push the back cushion to one of its other many settings. The legs of the cair perfectly match the vibe of the couch. They are dark brown, most likely a walnut color and they curve to make them skinny at the end, round and robust in the middle, and skinny at the top again. They are like miniature wooden vases attached to a couch, except they are not hollow. The couch is not only multi functional on the front side. On the bottom of the couch lie two zippers that open up to a storage compartment. I imagine these compartments are to hold pillows and blankets for when the futon is being used by a house guest. The arms of the couch don’t rise too high. They are just high enough to rest your arm when it is by your side, but not high enough to lean back on if you want to lay your feet out. This is somewhat of an inconvenience, but all in all, this couch is the perfect couch to occupy a tiny apartment in New York City.
