My favorite writing assignment took place over the course of a month during the spring of 2020. I was in the aftermath of the dorms closing down at city college and having to move back home when I received an email from my sports academic advisor about a scholarship. Not only had I lost my job due to the pandemic, but I also needed something to keep me busy while quarantined with my whole family. I had to write about a very impactful moment in my life that showed the hardships of life. Immediately I thought of one of the hardest points which was helping my mom go through her chemotherapy after being diagnosed with breast cancer. Since I was the eldest out of my three sisters and my parents did not know a lot of English, I had to help my mom with all her doctor visits. I was a junior in High School and had to quit playing soccer as well as my extracurricular activities in order to help at home with my younger siblings as well as be there for my mom. The grand prize was 1000 dollars and seemed like a good idea to at least try and keep me occupied. Although there weren’t many limitations I knew that this was something I needed some help with and therefore reached out to my Writing for The Social Sciences professor to help me out with the whole process. The topic was very personal to me, but it was something that after four years I felt comfortable enough to write about. This writing experience is something that had many positive effects. It helped me become a better writer by going through a process of many rough drafts. It helped me get to know myself better as a writer which still impacts me to this day. Also, the experience proved to be therapeutic. Writing or journaling has become a very big part of my daily life and I feel like writing for this scholarship was a big reason why I started to begin with. Looking back at it now I feel like writing about something that was very challenging, helped me also get a little more closure. It also helped me look at that period of my life from a different perspective. I even translated it out for my mom before I submitted the essay and we ended up having a very heartwarming conversation about our past hardships together.
